Translation.
This Deed written on this Nineteenth day of November in the
Tear of our Lord 1861
19 November., 1861 is a full and final sale conveyance and surrender by us the Chiefs and
People of the
Kaipara District. Tribe Te Taou o Ngatiwhatua whose names are hereunto subscribed And
Witnesseth that on behalf of ourselves our relatives and descendants we have by
signing this Deed
Okaka. under the shining sun of this day parted with and for ever transferred
unto Victoria Queen of England Her Heirs the Kings and Queens who may succeed
Her and Her and Their Assigns for ever in consideration of the Sum of one
hundred and thirty eight Pounds 16/6 (£138 . 16 . 6) to us paid by
John Rogan on behalf of the Queen
Victoria (and we hereby acknowledge the receipt of the said monies) all that
piece of our Land situated at Kaipara and named Okaka the boundaries whereof are
set forth at the foot of this Deed and a plan of which Land is annexed thereto
with its trees minerals waters rivers lakes streams and all appertaining to the
said Land or beneath the surface of the said Land and all our right title claim
and interest whatsoever thereon To Hold to Queen Victoria Her Heirs and Assigns
as a lasting possession absolutely for ever and ever. And in testimony of our
consent to all the conditions of this Deed we have here-unto subscribed our
names and marks. And in testimony of the consent of the Queen of England on her
part to all the conditions of this Deed the name of John Rogan Commissioner is
hereunto subscribed. These are the boundaries of the Land commencing at
Boundaries. [1,851 acres.] Whakatara thence along the sea beach on the West coast to Te Koroai
thence to the boundary of the Native Reserve at Tipare along the lines of the
Native Reserve bearing 49°. 30′ by compass 2150 links 245°. 30′ 2200 links
thence along the sea beach of Kaipara to Okaka thence to Matawhaura thence to
Waiotitore thence along the boundary lines of the Whiritoa block bearing 240°.
500 links 241° 2950 links 235°. 18500 links to Whakatara the point of
commencement.
