Translation.

This Deed executed at Whangarei on the thirty first day of January in the Year of Our 1855. 31 January.Whangarei District. Lord One Thousand eight hundred and fifty five, is for the sale of Land by us the undersigned— the Chiefs and freemen whose names are attached. This is our consent, for ourselves, for our relations, for our friends, for our children who may survive us, to finally make over to The Queen Victoria of England and heirs for ever, a portion of our land in Maungatapere. consideration of the sum of One Thousand five hundred pounds which we have this day Receipt for £1,500. received at the hands of John Grant Johnson Esquire a Commissioner for the purchase of Land on behalf of the Governor of New Zealand The following are the boundaries Boundaries. of the said Land, commencing at Motu Kiwi at the mouth of the Otaika river, thence in a westerly direction up the course of the Otaika river, to the cofluence of the Puwhero creek, thence to the Karanga, thence to Mangawheki; thence to Kai Kuihi where the boundary ceases to be the river, thence across the fern land, and through the wood to the plain of scoria land to a pole on the summit of a heap of scoria rocks thence along the edge of the forest to Te Ahimate thence to the forest to a large Kauri tree marked with a broad arrow—thence to a large Rata Tree thence to Whatakai thence to the Roto Ti thence in a southerly direction up the course of the stream Kumete to a line with Kotuhi thence in an easterly direction to Kotuhi, thence to Ngapuketurua, thence to Pukeatua thence to Whauauroa thence to Touhokia, thence to Te Ngako, thence to Tauoma, where it reaches the sea on the main river of Whangarei, thence to the Tokitoki, thence to Onemama thence to Motukiwi the point of commencement aforesaid. Two places are excepted from the sale within these boundaries being the Two places excepted, Motukiwi and Otaika. sacred spot at Motu Kiwi, and the cultivations on the bank of the Otaika river, which has been marked with poles by Mr. Johnson. Therefore we have taken leave of, and entirely given up this portion of our Land to the Queen Victoria of England, with all its rivers, lakes, waters, grass, trees, rocks, cliffs, and everything above and below the said land, and in witness whereof we have signed our names below.
