Translation.

Opotiki, 19 December, 1873
This1873 19 DecemberPoverty Bay District. is an agreement between the people Te Motu. whose names are hereto attached for themselves their relatives and hapus of the one part and John Wilson Land Purchase Commissioner Agreement to lease. acting on behalf of the Government of the other part. The said Maori people whose names are hereto attached do hereby consent to lease unto the said John Wilson acting on behalf of the Government, All that land belonging to them and situate at Te Boundaries. [68,482 acres.] Motu for a term of Fifty years. The boundaries of the said land commence at Kaitaura from whence it enters the Motu stream and follows the said stream to its mouth. Whakapaupakihi thence to its source thence it proceeds to Moutohora whence it breaks off and reaches Ngapukiriki from thence it proceeds to Pokaikiri, Te Pato and Moanui whence it enters the Korona stream and follows the said stream to its source whence it breaks off and proceeds along the confiscated boundary of the Government from Ukua to the Rangiriri stream thence it follows the said stream to Kaitaura. The said Maori Kaitaura Reserve. [500 acres.] people do hereby stipulate that Five hundred acres of land at Kaitaura be surveyed and set apart for their cwn use. The yearly rental of the said lease each and every year within Yearly rental. the said term shall be paid as follows. The yearly rental to be One hundred pounds £100 for each and every year for the first five years. One hundred and twenty five pounds £125 for each and every year for the next five years. One hundred and fifty pounds £150 for each and every year for the next five years. One hundred and seventy five pounds £175 for each and every year for the next five years. Two hundred pounds £200 for each and every year for the next five years. Two hundred and twenty five pounds £225 for each and every year for the next five years after which the yearly rental shall be Two hundred and fifty pounds £250 for the following twenty years till such date as the said lease shall expire. The said Maori people whose names are hereto attached for themselves their relatives and hapus shall on their part defray the expense of surveying the said land out of the money that shall be due to them as rent and in pursuance of which the Government shall deduct from the yearly rental paid to the said Maori people each and every year the sum of Fifty pounds £50 until such monies as paid by the Government to the surveyor shall be defrayed and that such deduction shall commence from the eleventh year of the said lease. The said Maori people for themselves their relatives and hapus shall also refund the sum of Three hundred pounds Receipt for £300 advance. £300 advanced to them to this day by the said John Wilson according to the terms of the said lease, such refund to commence on the charges for survey being paid in pursuance of which the Government shall deduct the sum of Fifty pounds £50 from the yearly rental for the term of six years till the said Three hundred pounds £300 shall be repaid. In the event of gold or silver being discovered on that land and being desirous of mining thereon they shall be permitted to do so according to miners' rights and fees for such rights shall be paid to the said Maori owners whose names are hereto attached. The fees to be charged for Miners' Rights to be one pound £1 per annum for every person engaged in mining. Should oil be discovered on that land all questions referring thereto shall be held in abeyance till such time as it may be found. And the said Maori people whose names are hereto attached for themselves their relatives and hapus do hereby agree to absolutely refrain from selling the said land to another person or persons within the aforementioned term of the said lease.
