Maori Deeds of Land Purchases in the North Island of New Zealand: Volume One

Translation

Translation.

1854. 28 March.Mokau District.This paper or deed transferring land written on this day on the twenty eighth (28) of the days of March in the Year of Our Lord One thousand eight hundred and fifty four (1854) Is a paper of the full and true consent of us the Chiefs and people of Awakino. Ngatimaniapoto whose names are attached to this paper on behalf of ourselves our relatives and descendants to entirely transfer a portion of our land or country to Victoria the Queen bf England or to the Kings or Queens who may succeed her for ever and ever.
Receipt for £500. And having fully consented to transfer this portion of our land Victoria the Queen of England on her part agrees to pay us Five hundred pounds (£500) in money which money has been paid into our hands this day by Mr. McLean.
Boundaries. [16,000 acres.] The Boundary of the land commences at Purapura and goes along the sea side to Huikomako and goes inland to Mangakahikatea and into the water of Mangakahikatea on to Manganui and goes in the water of the Manganui river until it reaches Awakino and crosses the Awakino and goes to Omoao and thence it turns seaward and goes on to Purapura where the boundaries join.
Five Reserves. The places reserved for us to live upon are these.
I.At Waikato and goes by the sea side to Waimahanga and goes inland to Pahaua and goes along the Pahaua ridge until it falls into the Waikato.
II.At Rangitoto a small piece of land for Hokipera.
III.At Ketekarino a small piece the boundaries of which have been fixed by Mr. Cooper and Rogan.page 625
IIII.Another place, the South boundary is at Ounutae, the North boundary at Waihi the inland boundary is at Orongorea.
V.Fifty Acres (50) are to be granted to Reihaua Takerei's son—Fifty Acres (50) are to be granted to Wetere Takerei's son.

These are assuredly all the places reserved for us within the lands which we have now transferred to Victoria the Queen of England under the shining sun of the present day and for ever, with its streams, rivers, waters, trees, stones, and everything either under or above the said land, and all and everything connected with the said land we have hereby transferred for ever and ever.

We hereby further consent that the Queen's roads or highways should be made Public roads through Reserves. through our reserves when such roads are required to be made.
The whole of the payment for this land is the Five hundred pounds (£500) which Price, £530. we received on this day and a further sum of Thirty pounds (£30) is to be reserved for Retained for Ngatirarua, £30. the Ngatirarua of Nelson which is to be handed to them by Takerei.

And having consented to all the conditions contained in this paper we hereunto write our names and marks.

And the Queen of England on her part having consented to all the conditions in this paper Donald McLean the Land Commissioner for the Government of New Zealand hereunto signs his name.
