Thames Foreshore (Rapana's Claim), Hauraki District.

This Deed1873 20 MayHauraki District. made the twentieth day of May one thousand eight hundred and seventy three Between Rapana Maunganoa an aboriginal Native Chief of Hauraki Province of Auckland and Colony of New Zealand of the one part and Her Majesty Queen Victoria of the other part Witnesseth that in consideration of the sum of One thousand three hundred and fifty pounds to the said Rapana Maunganoa by Her Majesty paid (the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged) He the said Rapana Maunganoa doth hereby convey and assure unto her said Majesty her heirs successors and assigns All the estate right title interest property claim and demand whatsoever of him the said Rapana Maunganoa of and to all that piece or parcel of land described in the schedule hereto With all the rights and appurtenances thereto belonging To hold the same unto her said Majesty her heirs successors and assigns for ever In Witness whereof the said parties have hereunto subscribed their names.

Signed by the said Rapana Maunganoa (the above written deed having been previously read over and interpreted to him in the Maori language when he seemed perfectly to understand the same and made his mark thereto) in the presence of—

George T. Wilkinson, Licensed Interpreter, Shortland;
And
J. A. Miller, Solr., G'town.

Schedule.

Boundaries. All that piece or parcel of the sea shore in the Frith of the Thames in the Province of Auckland aforesaid being adjacent to the Thames Gold Field extending from high water mark to low water mark and bounded on the one side by a line running south-west from the wharf at the mouth of the Kauaeranga Creek and on the other side by a line running west from the North west bank of the Tauaru Creek at its, mouth As delineated by the plan drawn hereon.

Signed by the said Rapana Maunganoa (the above-written Deed having been previously read over and explained to him in the Maori language, when he seemed page 513to perfectly understand the same, and made his mark thereto) in the presence of—

George T. Wilkinson, Licensed Interpreter, Shortland;
And
J. A. Miller, Solr., G'town.

Declaration of G. T. Wilkinosn. I, George Thomas Wilkinson, of Shortland, in the Province of Auckland and Colony of New Zealand, a duly licensed Interpreter under "The Native Lands Act, 1865," "The Native Lands Act, 1867," "The Native Lands Act Amendment Act, 1868," "The Native Lands Act, 1869," and "The Native Lands Act Amendment Act, 1870," do solemnly and sincerely declare as follows:—
  • 1. That. I was present on the twentieth day of May instant, together with James Armstrong Miller, of Grahamstown, in the said Province and Colony, Solicitor, a male adult, and did see Rapana Maunganoa, mentioned and described in the within-written deed, duly sign and execute the said deed and the Schedule thereto by affixing his mark to the said deed and Schedule respectively.
  • 2. That the mark "x" set and affixed to the said deed and Schedule respectively was so made, set, and affixed by the said Rapana Maunganoa.
  • 3. That the signatures "George T. Wilkinson," "J. A. Miller," respectively set and, subscribed to the said deed and Schedule as the Witnesses attesting the due execution thereof, are of the proper handwriting of me this declarant, and the said James Armstrong Miller respectively
  • 4. That immediately before the execution of the said deed and Schedule by the said Rapana Maunganoa, I did interpret the same to him into the Maori language, and that my translation thereof was correct and understood by the said Rapana Maunganoa.

And I make this solemn declaration conscientiously believing the same to be true, and by virtue of the above-named Acts of the General Assembly of, New Zealand, and of a certain other Act of the said General Assembly intituled "The Justices of the Peace Act, 1866."
