The amount of English capital invested in Tonga by traders is stated at £30,000, while Germas capital is invested to the amount of £140,000. Foreigners are charged the poll-tax of 8 dols, per annum after they have resided six months in the kingdom. For each buggy or carriage there is a tax of 5 dols, per annum; horses, carts, and drays, 1 dol. each; entire horses, 5 dols.; dogs, 25 cents. The following licence fees are charged :—Wholesale store, town, 70 dols.; country, 50 dols.; retail store, town, 25 dols.; country, 20 dols.; hawker, 10 dols.; auctioneer, 50 dols.; billiard table, 30 dols.; butcher or baker, town, 10 dols.; country, 6 dols.; restaurant licence (with permission to sell wine and beer to be drunk on the premises, but not to natives), 100 dols.; wholesale wine, beer, and spirit licence, 50 dols.; cargo boats, schooners, &c, 1 dol. per ton, with minimum charge of 5 dols.
