Preface

Preface.

To the Reader

I make no pretence of originality—I have used the brain work of Dr. Nevins, Mr. Stansfield, M.P., Mr. B. Scott (Chamberlain of London), Dr. Morgan, Mrs. Josephine Butler, Messrs. Logan, Edmondstone, Shaen, Earl Cairns (late Lord Chancellor), and the Hon. W. B. Dalley, M.L.C (Attorney General of New South Wales). The original idea is the Council for the Protection of Women and Morals.

The first edition of fifteen hundred copies of my three lectures on the Social Evil being exhausted, I think that in the present position of the question it is only needful to reprint the third, which I have done with revision and addition.

The amendments recently made in the law of New South Wales in the direction of the Social Purity Policy, the introduction of a Government Bill into the Imperial Legislature, the recent rise of a Social Purity movement in Queensland, are encouraging signs of the times.

In South Australia, I note with gratitude, that the following Ecclesiastical Assemblies in Session assembled, have passed votes of sympathy with the Social Purity Society:—The Baptist Association, the Congregational Union, the Wesleyan Conference, the Primitive Methodist Conference, the Bible Christian Conference, S. A. Presbytery, and the Church of England Synod. At the latter the Bishop spoke heartily in favor. The Roman Catholic Bishop has oxpressed sympathy with the objects in view.
