The Pamphlet Collection of Sir Robert Stout: Volume 78

Julian Hawthorne

Julian Hawthorne.

Speaking many years ago to the students of Yale University. Julian Hawthorne earnestly exhorted them to keep themselves always in the fittest physical condition, as the only effective means by page 27 which they could maintain supremacy over themselves and those innate tendencies which have to be fought with and mastered. As a doctor, one cannot overstate the medical importance of this aspect of the case, though it cannot be discussed in a public newspaper. I may mention, however, that I have a letter from Dr Leringe, late superintendent of the asylum at Christhurch (the physician who has had the most extensive experience of insanity in this colony), in which he gives his opinion that over-pressure in connection with our school life tends to set up a vicious circle by lessening the power of nervous control, and so paying the way to general instability of the nervous system, sexual irregularities, and insanity itself.
