Rules.

The name of the Society is "The Canterbury Society for the Preservation of Infant Life."

Objects.

The objects of the Society are indicated by its name, and include the following :—
1.To encourage the bringing up of children by Nature's method.
2.To disseminate accurate information on matters affecting the health of women and children by means of lectures, pamphlets, correspondence and otherwise.
3.To provide for the issue of humanised milk to the public.
4.To provide for the analysis of milk.
5.To provide and employ Nurses ready at any time to give advice and instructions to mothers in the home and elsewhere.
6.To promote legislative reform in matters affecting the health of women and children, as shall from time to time appear necessary.
7.To co-operate with other organisations working for the same ends.

Membership.

All persons who subscribe the sum of not less than 5s. a year to the funds of the Society shall be deemed members of the Society.

The Society's year begins on the first day of September.

The donor of a contribution of not less than £50 shall be a life member of the Society without being bound to pay the annual subscription. Anyone desirous of becoming a member must send in his or her name to the Secretary, accompanied by one year's subscription, unless he or she is already a lite member, or becomes such on joining the Society.

Officers and Committee.

The officers shall consist of a Patroness President, three Vice-Presidents, Honorary Treasurer, Honorary Secretaries (who shall be ex officio members of the Committee), and a Committee of 20 members.

The Officers and Committee shall be elected at the Annual General Meeting of the Society.

The following shall be the Officers and Committee until the first Annual General Meeting, with power to add to their number :—
  • Patroness—Her Excellency Lady Plunket.
  • President—Dr. Alice Moorhouse.
  • Vice-Presidents—Mesdames Boyle, Maude and Morton.page 5
  • Hon, Treasurer—Mrs. L. Clark.
  • Honorary Secretaries—Mrs. F. H. Pyne and Miss L. Cook.

The Committee shall conduct and manage the general business and affairs of the Society, and may exercise all such powers, and do all such acts and things as may be exercised or done by the Society for the purpose of carrying out the objects of the Society as hereinbefore defined.

The officers and other members of the Committee shall continue in office until the election of their successors at an Annual General Meeting.

Retiring members shall be eligible for re-election.

Any vacancy occurring in the Committee during the year may be filled up by the Committee.

The Secretary, or in her absence, any of the other officers shall be Convener of the Committee, and a meeting of the Committee shall be bound to be page 6 convened whenever the President or Vice-President or any two other members of the Committee desire a meeting to be called.

Any seven members of the Committee, including Secretary, Treasurer, and either President or one of the Vice-Presidents shall constitute a quorum.

The Treasurer, or Secretary, shall have power to receive subscriptions and donations.

Advisory Board.

There shall be a Board of five gentlemen to give advice to the Committee when needed. Members shall be elected by the Committee.

The following are the present Board :—
  • Dr. Finch
  • Dr. Gibson
  • Mr. P. Hallenstein
  • Dr. Levinge
  • Mr. T. Maude

General Meetings.

An Annual General Meeting of the Society shall be held in the first week of the month of September of the year 1908, and of every subsequent year, at which, in addition to the election of the Committee a report of the Society's operations and a balance sheet duly audited for the past year shall be presented. If, from any cause, the meeting cannot be held on the date fixed the same shall be held on a day to be fixed by the President and Secretary.

A Special General Meeting may be convened at any time by direction of the Committee.

Funds and Property.

All moneys received shall be paid into the credit of the Society with some bank, and cheques drawn on the banking account shall be signed by the Treasurer, and countersigned by the Secretary, Endorsement of cheques or orders in the Society's favour may be made in a similar manner.

All other property shall be vested in the names of Mrs. F. H. Pyne and Mrs. Leonard Clark as trustees for the Society.

The Society may increase the number of Trustees, and appoint new Trustees in the place of any present or retiring Trustee, by resolution at any General Meeting of the Society.

Alteration of Rules.

These Rules may be added to or amended at any General Meeting of the Society if seven days' notice has previously been given to the Secretary of the proposed alteration or amendment.
