Libraries and Churches.

As an indication of the progress of the district, it may be noted that there were in April, 1896, seventy-three public libraries, mechanics' institutes. and scien- page 68 tific institutions, with a membership of 3,647; and 277 churches or chapels, attended by 42,615 persons.
