8. Quantity of Existing Coal.
The difficulty of determining the total quantity of coal contained in any country has been well exemplified in the case of Great Britain, and it is obviously impossible in a place like New Zealand to make even [unclear: ai] approximate estimate. Sir James Hector, however, whose knowledge of the coal-fields is unequalled, has published his opinion on this point,* [unclear: is] follows:—
