Letter from Atareta Taratoa, daughter of Nepia Taratoa

Letter from Atareta Taratoa, daughter of Nepia Taratoa.

To

Mr. Williams.

"Listen. Ngatiapa had no authority over the land on this side of Rangitikei, the mana was with my father on this side, down to Omarupapako; and there were no Ngatiapas living on the land at the time when Ngatiapa sold it to Dr. Featherston; for my father had given up all the land on the other side of Rangitikei, up to Wangaehu, to Ngatiapa. But with resect to the leases, they had been allowed by my father to join in the leases; but in the money alone, not in the land. I am fully aware and quite positive that it was my father's fixed determination that the land should be retained for his people alone, for Ngatiraukawa. I never signed my name to page lxxi Dr. Featherston's deed of purchase, and all that has been given to me, is one hundred acres.
