The Pamphlet Collection of Sir Robert Stout: Volume 38

"St. Jarlath's College, Tuam, January 30th, 1880

"St. Jarlath's College, Tuam,

"My Dear Lord Mayor,

"Your letter literally astounds me. How it is any man, or men, could concoct such a calumny as that referred to in your letter passes my comprehension. Why, it is as notorious as any public fact can be, that the praiseworthy exertions and labours of your Committee are all undergone in the interests of the poor struggling tenants and starving poor of Ireland, without distinction of creed, and have already saved the lives of thousands of our afflicted poor. Your Committee, composed of gentlemen of every creed, who merge every other consideration in the interests of charity, dispense page 62 the charities confided to you with the greatest fairness, and, as far as I know, have secured public confidence in your judgment and impartiality.

"With sincerest esteem, believe me, very sincerely yours,

John M'Evilly.

"Right Hon. The Lord Mayor of Dublin."
