The sales in 1875 amounted to 318,681 acres, and produced 448,697l., at the following prices, viz.:—
Hitherto the upset prices have varied from 10s. to 40s. per acre in the different provinces, with varying conditions. The preceding valuation at 7s. 6d. per acre all round is therefore moderate.
The opening of roads and railways renders the crown lands year by year more valuable, and the policy has always been to fix such an upset price as will encourage purchases for the purposes of settlement, and not for. speculation or land jobbing.
