Salmonida

Salmonida.

Body covered with scales, head naked; barbels none. Margin of the upper jaw formed by the intermaxillaries mesially, and by the maxillaries laterally. Belly rounded. A small adipose fin page 84 behind the dorsal. Pyloric appendages generally numerous, rarely absent. Air-bladder large, simple; pseudobranchiæ present. The ova fall into the cavity of the abdomen before exclusion.

Fresh waters of the temperate and arctic regions of the northern hemisphere, many species periodically descending to the sea. One genus from New Zealand; two genera pelagic.
