Victoria '65 Supplement to Salient, Vol. 28, No. 1. 1965.

Identity Cards In '65

Identity Cards In '65

Victoria University students will be the first in New Zealand to use Identity and concession cards. The cards are based on similar cards used at United States universities.

Overseas, student cards are used extensively by both student organisations and university administrations. In most U.S. universities the cards are compulsory for all students and are issued at enrolment.

At Victoria, I.D. cards are not compulsory for all students, but will be required by those seeking concessions, either "downtown" or when using special Students' Association facilities or attending some student functions.

Office staff will require presentation of I.D. cards by all students making theatre bookings or seeking tie, blazer and magazine chits. Arrangements have also been made with business firms to accept the card for personal and credit identification and cheque cashing.

It is hoped that in future years the cards will be issued to all students on enrolment and will be used by the university administration for examination entries, library check-outs and identification of students.

The I.D. and concession card will be permanent, and will be validated each year by affixing an adhesive sticker to the back, showing the student's signature, card number, academic course and current address. The face of the card will show the student's full name, birth date, card number, and also a small photograph. The card will be enclosed in a permanently sealed plastic cover. Full-time students will be identified by a green-faced card, part-time students by a red-faced card.

Students wanting identity cards should call at the Association office with a passport size photograph of themselves, or else have their photo taken free by the photographer who will be present in the Union during the first week of term. The I.D. card will then be compiled from the information in the student files, the photograph affixed to the I.D. card and the card sealed inside its permanent plastic container.

The card will then be validated for the current year by affixing the 1965 sticker with the relevant details on the back of the I.D. card.

Replacement of a card will cost 10/-, but it is hoped that the Cards will initially be free to all students.

The I.D. and concession card has been introduced for the benefit of students. It is hoped that through I.D. cards a greater number of concessions can be obtained for genuine students. (A case in point is the proposed Cable Car concession.) Although not compulsory, it is honed that most students will make use of this service.
