New, Economical and Versatile
Computers come in a variety of shapes and sizes according to the uses to be made of them. A growing range of data processing applications in almost every field of work ensures good and expanding career opportunities for graduates entering the computer industry.
Shown here is an overseas set-up which includes the latest model (a new-version "Model 20") in the IBM System/360 series and some of its possible attachments. Just announced in New Zealand, the equipment is designed to handle many applications which previously called for more complex and expensive computers, and can also do the work of punch card and ledger accounting machines. It is regarded as a very economical and versatile proposition for the smaller business concern. Clockwise from left back: six tape drives, a printer, the Model 20 console and central processing unit, a multiple function card machine, a card reader, a typewriter (for communications between the machine and an operator), and four disc drives. The tape and disc drives store the instruction used by the central processing unit.
