Drama Club Replies

An advance proof of our page one article on the Drama Club was supplied to the club, and the following reply has been received:

Sir,

We refer to the front page headline of this issue.

Bertram and Robertsons' motion (No. 101/65) read as follows:

"That the Drama Club be requested to forward a cheque for £10 to the secretary of the Management Committee for the purchase of capital equipment for the theatre. '

This was the motion that was carried at the meeting of Executive on Tuesday 16th March.

There was no mention of a fine.

Surely such inaccuracies in the major headline of Salient do little to improve its reputation.

We quote the words of two vice-presidents of the Executive Committee in reference to this matter :

Helen Sutch: "Completely erroneous. "

Tim Bertram: "Bull. "

Richard H. Cathie
President, V. U. W. Drama Club
Mark von Dadelszen
Committee Member.

Salient's Reporter comments:

"The original motion had the word 'required' in the place of 'requested' - which would clearly have been a fine. When the story was written to minutes were available and I relied on my notes. The change of wording was suggested at the meeting, but I was not aware that it was made. In any event, the action of the Executive was the result of the events outlined in the article and is only a modified version of the original intention to fine the club."

Salient agrees that the heading does not indicate that Executive made a request, not a direction, but feels that read as a whole the article gives a full, fair, and accurate account of the Executive meeting.
