Salient. An Organ of Student Opinion at Victoria College, Wellington, N.Z. V.U.C. Students' Association Annual Elections, 1953

Ian Free

Ian Free

As retiring Vice-President, it is with much pleasure that I nominate Ian Free for this position. Now in his fifth year and a part-timer in arts, he has a sincere pride in Victoria and will be proud to serve her. His many friendships with students in other centres enable him to place occurrences here in the broader context of the whole University of N.Z. He has given valuable service to the Association; he was Asst. Billeting Controller for Easter Tournament 1952 and is Senior Delegate for the coming winter tournament in Auckland in August. That he was chosen for this big Job Illustrates the confidence the retiring Exec. have in him. He was secretary to the Drama Club in 1952-3 and is at present Treasurer to the Swords Club for the second time. He is a member of the Philosophical Society, and has been on the editorial staff of "Cappicade" for the past three years. He was chairman of the Hospital Board in this year's Extrav.

Ian's major sport is fencing, in which he has won the provincial intermediate title and a college blue. He captained the college team at tournament last year. Table tennis, tennis and golf are his other sports.

He wishes to increase the corporate aspect of student life and believes this can be achieved, partly by an enlightened Exec. attitude to clubs of all types. His vitality and energy would make him an admirable vice-president.

Nominator: Ken Phillips.

Seconders: Tim Beaglehole and Elaine Foote.
