Youthline

There are about sixty of us in Youthline — mostly in our twenties. We are all volunteers and we run everything ourselves. We have been through a selection procedure lasting about eleven weeks — this is taken by a trained social workers or an experienced counsellor. Our training never really finishes though. We are supervised regularly and we have special training sessions.

A new group is selected and trained every three or four months. If you are Interested in applying please ring and tell us — we really welcome new people.

Or if you're interested in finding out about how Youthline operates we will be happy to talk to you, your organisation, your group or your class. We have pamphlets and other information to send to anyone interested.

But most of all, if there is anything you want to talk about, then rina UP at 721-888 or call in at Youthline House, Sydney St East, Thorndon (just next to the Wellington Pub).

The telephone rings

We could be talking for anything up to two hours. But then again you might hang up without saying anything at all That often happens You might want to discuss a problem — loneliness, relationship or sexual hassles, something that happened recently — a crisis? Maybe you just want to talk — about yourself, about the weather I don't mind. This could be the first and last time you ring. Possibly you've rung before — perhaps you ring quite frequently Perhaps you will tell me your name — quite likely you won't want to. There's no need to You might be quite glad we can't see each other and we don't know each other — probably never will We may discuss things we wouldn't even tell our closest friends. But if you would feel better being with me when we are talking you could always come to Youthline House after or instead of ringing. We are here any time between 4.30 and 11 00 weekdays and until 1.00 Fridays and Saturdays.
