Salient. Official Newspaper of the Victoria University Students' Association. Vol 42 No. 21. September 3 1979

[Introduction]

It has always been my opinion that the National Commission, and the work done by NZUSA to action National policy, is one of the more interesting areas of NZUSA's work. After all, there's a wide, wide world of noble causes; and even in a country of only 20 million sheep, New Zealand students have always justifiably found many things that could be improved upon. The policy that NZUSA holds on issues within New Zealand has, therefore, grown in diversity almost as much as it has length (about 90 motions to date).

But 1979 has seen the focus of NZUSA's attention turn to the field of education, in the face of severe Government attacks upon the whole system, not just upon university students. And, obviously, both Government attacks and NZUSA's opposition will continue through at least 1980.

Stephen A 'Court illustrates his famous reporting style (which also explains why this report is so brief).

However, far from being overshadowed by this, work in National has been designed to complement the Education Fightback Campaign. National has taken the important role of emphasising the fact that the cuts to Education are part of a wider economic downturn. "Economic Fightback" is the term that has been coined to describe the first priority of National until May Council 1980. This means that the GVP will concentrate, especially in the third term, on unemployment and student unemployment, urging union membership upon students during the summer vacation, and also working in civil liberties.

Work in the area of finding jobs for students is even more important in the light of a rumour that the TSG will not be given to students who do not find work during the summer vacation. The second, and final, priority of National until next Council is domestic racism.
