To find out what students are thinking about the Movick issue, we armed reporter Caroline Stephens and photographer David Murray with three questions and sent them into the fray.

The Questions

1.Do you know about the James Movick case?
2.Do you think he should be allowed to stay in the country?
3.The dealine expires tomorrow. What do you think we should do?

Student 1

1.He's a student leader who is being told by the Government 1b leave in two days.
2.Yes. I think his academic record isn't relevant, although the Government must apply thier rules as they stand.
3.I think we should fight his case, but there's not much point. I think that James should stay on after the expiry date if he feels confident enough to do so.

Student 2

1.He's a president of a union who has applied for a permit but the Immigration Department have refused.
2.Yes. Many people get permits to stay in New Zealand so why not him?
3.James should leave and then reapply for a permit.

Student 3

1.He's a Fijian student who is being deported because his academic record is not good enough. He is also an official of a student union.
2.He should be allowed to stay because of his position as a union official. The Immigration Department is not being fair.
3.Not much can be done now as most things have failed. Only blowing up the Immigration Department would do anything.

Student 5

1.This is a case of bungling on the part of the Immigration Department. They confused the type of permit James was applying for and the ministerial committee have abused their power of discretion.
2.Yes. Gill's arguments just don't hold water. I think James has a good case.
3.I think James must be allowed to stay.

Student 6

1.I think the decision of the Immigration Department is slack and prejudiced
2.Yes. James has a contribution to make and in this case his student involvement should overrule his academic record.
3.James should stay and fight, but the Government are adamant and there's only a small possibility they'll change their mind.

Student 7

1.He's a student leader who is being refused, appermit on the grounds of his academic record.
2.His record is not relevant and I think that anyone who wants to stay should be allowed to
3.The Government doesn't listen to student, but I think James should stay on and fight — the Government just might change their mind.
