Lee Kuan Yew's Island in the Sun

Lee Kuan Yew's Island in the Sun.

Dear Editor,

In response to Suaran Raat's letter entitled 'Warning! The Surgeon General Has Determined That Living Is Dangerous To Your Health', as a Singaporean I was taught that my country is one of the cleanest in S.E. Asia. You wouldn't find a single piece of paper in the streets in Singapore. Our P.M. Mr Lee Kuan Yew has certainly done a fine job. Just a look at the Istana Garden and the beautiful tourist resorts, and the western style shopping complexes that our government has built all this in keeping with the the advance of modern living, making Singapore the 30th [unclear: rihest] country in the world yet we are proud of this tiny kingdom. This is the message that the leaders will sing and always praise.

I sympathise with the poor pollution control in Japan and the feelings of the Japanese people, but under such challenges In this modern world it is very hard for the world to be perfect. Some have to lose and in this case the people who have to live near industrial areas who will have to suffer. Despite the high cost of rapid development in Japan the cost of living is rocketing! If you are Japanese you wouldn't like to live in Japan. Everything is just so mechanical! With the Japanese now investing in Singapore eletronic goods will be cheaper and the people will be able to use washing machines and watch colour T.V.

If you are in Singapore as tourists you will be able to buy Singapore made goods and souvenirs dead cheap. The people in Singapore do things really cheap. Soon they will be out of jobs because Singapore will be too mechanised. With economic advancement Singapore is able to build luxurious tourist hotels with cheap girls, beautiful casinos to meet your needs! Enjoy the Americanised Island in the Sun with plentiful beauty contests to attract tourists.

As for Suaran's concern over the future tragedy of Singapore I don't think that the Government should ever worry! They have learnt to eat frozen food and meat from other countries! Pollution to Singapore will create no problem for Harry Lee. As far as we are concerned we cannot be more careful with what we eat in future. Our future generation will be taught not to worry and be proud of the country. But . . . we can we afford that?

Our country is so rich yet the people are so poor, even though Singapore is the 30th richest country in the world and our security is assured. I wake up from my dreams of Singapore clean, wealthy and beautiful but all those dreams have not been created in Singaporeans interests!

What can we do to help shape our country's future? we are willing to ask, raise our voices and gather our opinions learn the experiences from others' tragedies, we will be able to live in peace, enjoying our country's natural beauties with no need for our lives tobe just a struggle for our personal needs! I wish that Singaporeans and concerned friends will contribute their views to wake up people like me, who, before I came to realise the government in our country is not looking after the best Interests of our country.

Yours etc,

Jeffrey Lee.
