Student Photographs Made Available to 'Police Officer'

A student, active in Association affairs, telephoned Mr. J.H. Jauncey, official University photographer of 1967, 68, 70, 71, and told him that he was "Inspector Quilliam" of Central Police.

He said he wanted to check up on and track down a few students. He asked if he could come and get some copies of Mr. Jauncey's photo's of these students. Mr. Jauncey said that he was only too happy to help and asked when the Inspector wanted to come in and look through his files. He went on to say that many students objected to having their photographs taken but had no say in the matter as it was a condition of enrolment at University. Those who objected usually said to Mr. Jauncey, "you won't let the police or the security people see these will you?".

Mr. Jauncey always replied, "No". But on this occasion Mr. Jauncey seemed to think it was a great joke—chuckle, chuckle. He said he would inform his wife that the Inspector was coming to ensure that the Inspector got the photo's should Mr. Jauncey himself not be there the next day.

[We cannot divulge the real name of 'Inspector Quilliam' because impersonating a police officer is an offence. However, to protect students from such requests as those outlined above, Salient suggests that Mr. Jauncey be required to destroy his photographic files of students. He's got photo's of all students who enrolled at this University in the years 1967, 68, 70, 71 and obviously has no qualms about selling them to anyone despite request: from the University that he should only sell a photo of a student to that student and no-one else. Actually we believed it to be a condition of his contract - Ed]
