Protest students thanked

A formal letter of thanks has been received from Toby Hill, President of the Wellington Trades Council thanking students for their part in the demonstration outside Parliament on its opening day earlier this year.

In identical letters under the letterhead of "The New Zealand (except Northern and Westland) Shipwrights', Boatbuilders', Joiners' and Related Trades Union ' and "The New Zealand Harbour Boards Employees' Union", Mr Hill wrote:

"Members of the above unions wish to express their appreciation of the students who genuinely participated in the Wellington Trades Council's protest meeting.

"The Trades Council protest was most effective in the response of the affiliated unions in stopping work for the day.

"The problems of students and wage earners in their efforts to obtain a better way of life, will require a closer understanding of each other."

The letters were sent to Tony Haas who has given them to the University Labour Club for "historical preservation".
