Those interested in casting an intelligent vote in the coming local body elections might think about the cost of the airport development the City Council wants Government finance for — which the Government is sure is unnecessary. Airport upgrading is needed, quite explicitly, to help Wellington businessmen cut their costs, and nationally an airport at Auckland might he far more economic. The money might much better he spent on civic amenities that benefit everyone—more parks, more sports facilities, better cultural services that are provided automatically by European municipalities. And just in case you think we're being all Bolshic about both the Labour and Citizens tickets, united on the need to waste your money on the airport, most of what we've said here came over in a speech by Mr J. A. McCready (in case you don't know, the National M.P. for Otaki) last week.

They're Holding the country to ransom—and unashamedly pulling sectional interests before those of the country as a whole. Their decision to stop work will cost the country money, and lose workers their job. Irresponsible, that's what it is. Which union is it this time? It's not a union at all. It's the Wellington City Council, which slopped work at Rongotai—but as it's an employer who slopped work, not a union, there are not frantic Cabinet statements and go-back-to-work lead stories in the Evening Post. But the country IS being held to ransom. And men ARE losing their jobs. It's not that this is a class society, of course—it's just that there's one law for the employers and another for the unions.

One union in the country with a big grievance is the Southland Journalists' Union which goes into print with its problems in the August issue of the New Zealand Journalist. Did you know that the Southland Rugby Football Union didn't invite all the reporters covering the France-Southland rugby match to the boozeup afterwards? That's really hitting the journalists where it hurts.

Everyone has found it hard to get candidates for the elections. Citizens only got a mayoral candidate on their second go, and then your friendly Citizens paper the Dominion ran an editorial saying politely the candidate wasn't really very good and why didn't they shop round a hit more. And it's an open secret Labour had to remake its Council list about the times because of withdrawals though to do it credit if never considered not standing Sir Francis Kitts. It's the fag-end of the politicoes that are on the ballot this year.
