News From The Annual Meeting Of 22 July

It was decided to reduce the size of Council's Executive Committee from 14 members (out of the 18 on Council to eight members. The committee usually meets a week before full Council. It will in future be known as Standing Committee.

Acting on an interim report from Joint Committee on Student Participation, Council agreed to place student representatives on three further sub-committees. Two students will be added to the ceremonial committee, one to the purchase of works of art standing committee, end two to the appointments board. These sub-committees are principally noted for their infrequeney of their meeting. Appointments Board, for instance, meets only once a year.

Chancellor Dr P. P. Lynch, having indicated his desire to step down, Mr R. S. V. Simpson was elected unopposed to succeed him. Mr K. B. O'Brien replaces Mr Simpson as Pro-Chancellor and Mr J. N. Laurenson will take over as Treasurer from Mr O'Brien.

Mr Simpson spoke of Dr Lynch's "long years of service for university education". He had joined Council in 1946, was Pro-Chancellor from 1959 end Chancellor from 1966. He would continue as an ordinary member of Council. It was decided to commission artist Peter McIntyre to paint Dr Lynch's portrait and to hold a dinner in his honour in October.

At its last meeting Council had referred the question of dates for the University's terms in 1969 to Professorial Board. The Vice-chancellor reported that the Board was seeking from other universities their dates for 1969.

A report on the enrolment of first-year students wes received from Liaison Officer, Mr R. Hogg. The pattern was much the seme as in other years though numbers had fallen from the peak in 1965. The proportion of full-time students wes a little less than in 1967. Out of 1148 parsons enrolling directly from secondary school this year only 13 were Maoris.

Various changes were made in course regulations. A unit of Drama II will become available on the appointment of a lecturer in drama; there will be a unit of Maori III end a terminal unit of General Mathematics, and Insurence Lew and Practice will be added to LL.M. Another course change is that the number of papers in Russian honours will be reduced from seven to six.

A letter wes received from Professor Minn, head of the School of Social Science, asking that its name be changed to Department of Social Science end Sociology. He thought the present name suggested something with wider interests end was confusing. Council asked for the opinion of Professorial Board.

Council as usual excluded the public and Press from the latter part of its meeting on the grounds [unclear: -] "publicity would be prejudicial to the public interest [unclear: -] would "be likely to cause unnecessary personal embarrassment to some persons".
