Jubilee Cup prospects

Jubilee Cup prospects

By beating Marist 13-6 last Saturday, University have continued on their winning way in recent weeks. Now in second position, one point behind Petone whom they beat 15-6 three weeks ago, the present team has an excellent chance of winning the cup for the first time since Varsity were joint champions in 1964.

Plagued by injuries to key players, Mick Williment, Gary Weinberg and Gerald Kember at the beginning of the season. Varsity appeared out of form and lacked cohesive teamwork in their makeshift backline and light, inexperienced forward pack. Now backs and forwards have matured considerably since the defeat at the hands of newly promoted Naenae early in the season.

The inclusion of former All Black Ian Uttley at centre has now given Varsity the most incisive backline in the competition, beginning with halfback Recce Barlow, the strong running new rep player. There is NZU first five eight and All Black Gerald Kember, second five Mark Sayers, Uttley, and wingers, the enterprising Joe Huwyler and Gary Weinberg with Mick Williment at fullback.

But it is the forwards who have improved most admirably, completely dominating the heavy experienced Petone pack in their recent encounter. Forwards to shine this season have been lock John Tovey who has won a lot of ball at number 2 in the lineout, hooker Mick Gourley with an impressive list of tries and the loose forward trio of captain Derek Barton. John Kirkby and Joe Pope.

Record so far this season: Played 9. won lost 1, drew 1. points for 157, against 89, championship points 15.
