NZUSA plans four student seminars

NZUSA will conduct four seminars within the next 12 months.

An Overseas Students' Seminar will allow overseas students to discuss the problems revealed at a seminar 18 months ago. "There are about 1,000 overseas students in New Zealand," said Otago Acting President Joe Manickavasagam.

"They come here for degrees but this is a way in which they will be able to contribute something and take something home."

A Race Relations Seminar will follow a programme yet to be prepared by Mr. Peter Allan the present National Work Camps Officer and Seminar Director in cooperation with the NZUSA President.

A model United Nations Council will be held in Wellington in August.

This Council will take the form of a General Assembly debate on the subject of Rhodesia.

It provides a chance for students other than executive members to express themselves at a national forum.

Representatives will have to put the arguments of the specific country they are appointed to speak for.

In order to do this, they will be expected to come to Wellington before the Council to confer with the diplomatic representatives of "'their country".

It was suggested at Council that a problem more closely related to the Pacific or South-East Asia should be debated but Rhodesia was finally decided upon despite the abstention by Lincoln on the grounds that this was a subject which, their AGM had decided, New Zealand students had no business to debate as it was a matter of "Rhodesian Government by Rhodesians."

A student Leader Seminar will be held in Auckland within the next 12 months.

"At this Council, a lot of people have come along who don't know a lot about NZ USA," Mr. McGrath said. "This seminar will help to combat this."
