Sportsman of the year

Gerald Kember

Gerald Kember has been named Victoria's "Sportsman of the Year." The announcement was made by the chairman of the Olympic and Commonwealth Games Selection Committee, Mr J. Austad. at the recent annual Blues Dinner.

Kember was the final choice by the Blues Panel of eight names selected from the 1967 Blues nominations. These others were Miss Helen Schwartz. Fencing; Lim Ee Chiat, Badminton; John Gibbons, Rugby and Rowing: Peter Wear, Rowing; Roger Girdlestone. 303 Shooting; Tony Bunt. Yachting; and, Richard Hawkes. Squash.

This is the third year that the award has been made. Last year it was won by Olympic Rower, John Gibbons.

Presenting the cup. Mr Austad spoke of Kember's versatility. He told the gathering of sportsmen of Kember's selection from the Varsity side for the NZU [unclear: tour] Cricket team at the [unclear: con] mencement of this year, [unclear: an] then of his recent [unclear: selectin] for the All Black [unclear: toun] party due to leave in [unclear: a] days on a tour of the [unclear: Britis] Isles.

Kember is the twelfth 4 Black from Victoria. One his more illustrious predecer sors. Mr Ron Jarden was [unclear: th] guest speaker for the evening

Speaking to the recipien of Blues for 1967, Mr [unclear: Jarde] commended them on the successful blending of [unclear: fir] class sport with University study.
