Iris Murdoch, a famous English novelist and former lecturer in Philosophy at Oxford, paid a fleeting visit to Victoria recently. She and her husband. John Bailey, a well-known literary critic, were in Wellington for only twenty-four hours.
In Auckland. Christchurch and Dunedin. Mrs. Murdoch gave public lectures on literature, but at her own request, her visit to Victoria was un-publicised. An informal evening of philosophical discussion was held between her and about 25 Philosophy Department staff members and students, on the general topic of the relation between a work of art and a moral action.
