So the conspirators went ahead, named Nigel after a top Australian racehorse, gave him a face — Mr. Pedder's photograph clipped out of the Otago student paper Critic— and started the publicity campaign.

It got off to a bad start Someone kept tearing down Conrad's manifesto. Someone kept putting it back Canta gave the two official candidates its back page, before Conrad had been' seriously considered. But eel a renegade paoer behind a renegade candidate — the independent Kobald gave Nigel its front page and on polling day to boot.

And interest mounted in a quiet way all day. Most people regarded a Harper victory as a foregone conclusion, ' but still voted according to their conscience. All they really wanted, however, was to know "Did Nigel Win?"

But no. While people phoned the students' association to find out the results, returning officer John Daysh counted on....

And Nigel Conrad? "Well, after all." said Mr. Da. over a post-election beer, "informal votes weren't really substantially up on last year. And who said they were all cast for Nigel Conrad, anyway?"

Or even Mr. Pedder.
