Salient: Victoria University Students' Paper. Vol. 28, No. 6. 1965.

Student Action: NZUSA

Student Action: NZUSA

"We are entering a new phase in student action" said Vic. delegate Alister Taylor.

"We have already achieved what the boycott was meant to achieve, and further action is planned to sustain public awareness."

Mr. Taylor was addressing the Internal Commission at NZUSA Easter Council.

The outcome of student agitation has been an excellent news coverage, six hours of radio-time and several TV spots.

Mr. Taylor said that outside pressure groups had been informed of the situation. The watersiders' Union had "acclaimed the students in their fight for educational freedom" he informed the Commission.

Otago delegate David More said "we all gasped in horror at the suggestion of a boycott." He said that as it got wide publicity it was a good thing after all.

It was evident from the Commission that universities were not agreed on priorities for government action. "This leaves us wide open for a Government attack," said Taylor.

He reproached NZUSA for not organising NZ student action. Their representation to the Government on bursaries has been inadequate, he said. "They should have led the universities in a concerted action."

It was decided a united front was necessary to air student grievances. NZUSA would decide the priorities and organize a national petition.

In addition such techniques as a seminar up-dating the Parry Report, possibly a Conference on Educational Development and constant pressuring of Government would be sponsored by NZUSA.
