Salient: Victoria University Students' Paper. Vol. 28, No. 6. 1965.

Really?

Really?

Salient Reporter

"This is a situation I have never heard of before," said the Minister of Education, Mr. A. E. Kinsella, in his address to the National Club.

He was replying to a question raised by J. Chandler on the financial difficulties of students compulsorily drafted into the army during the vacation.

Mr. Chandler pointed out that a student could save only about £60 in the army. "This with a boarding bursary of £80 is a hopelessly inadequate sum to expect a full-time student to exist on for a year in Wellington," he said.

"Surely the wage earned in the army is comparable to any other vacation jobs a student can take?" asked Mr. Kinsella. Any answer was lost in a chorus of moans.

Mr. Chandler explained that a student could earn at least £100 more in other employment in spite of having to allow for board. Alister Taylor told Mr. Kinsella in an aside that his army wage was £7 a week.

"You have brought this question Up," said Mr. Kinsella in conclusion, "and it is definitely worthwhile considering."
