We now have a social controller—Mike Hirschfeld—but it didn't seem that Exec really wanted one. For half an hour they tried to avoid appointing one. They tried to forget about it, they tried to appoint Exec member Dennis Paxie, they tried to put the matter off till the next meeting. All this because, as one member put it, they didn't see why someone appointed now should have full speaking and voting rights. Secretary Alister Taylor had called for applications for the post — but hadn't even bothered to bring them along to the meeting. He told the meeting what he could remember of them. Mike Hirschfeld must be quite a bloke, to worry Executive this much!—H.B.R.
