Salient: Victoria University Students' Paper. Vol. 28, No. 3. 1965.

Why Salient Is 'Free'

Why Salient Is 'Free'

Some students have been perplexed by Saltent's new financial and distribution system. The following explanatory statement has been issued by Salient's editors: Many students have an incorrect understanding of Salient's 1965 position. Last year all students, whether they bought Salient or not, contributed about 5/- from their Students' Association fee to cover Salient's losses.

Students who bought Salient's 15 1964 issues paid another 7/6. Unfortunately many students and visitors to the university took copies from honesty boxes without paying. About half the copies were never paid for.

At the end of 1964 the future of Salient was not bright. A rise in printing costs indicated that under the old system the subsidy in 1965 would need to be much higher.

A comprehensive report was made available to all interested students and at a well-attended general meeting students agreed by an eight-to-one majority that the 6d charge for Salient be abolished and a per capita subscription of 10/- be introduced.

The validity of this solution was confirmed, surely, when it was ratified by the University Council.

Salient is now distributed on a system common to other well-known student papers—each student is entitled to collect one copy of each issue free of further charge on publication.
