Salient: Victoria University Students' Paper. Vol. 28, No. 3. 1965.

Asian Studies

Asian Studies

Certain statements in the frontpage article on Asian Studies in Salient 2 were inaccurate. Salient regrets that they were made.

The article stated that "the Asian Studies Department is accepting students at Stage 1 and 2 level on the understanding that they will be able to pursue their studies to Stage 3." Salient is informed and is completely satisfied that the correct position is as stated by Professor Brookes Later in the article. The Asian Studies Department has been indicating to students that a possibility exists that Asian Studies 2 and 3 could become available again. No guarantee can be given that this will occur.

In addition, the implication was made at the beginning of the article and confirmed by statements later on that the information in the calendar was not correct, and that it had been reprinted erroneously from the previous year's Calendar. In fact, the information in the Calendar is accurate, and is based on a revised plan prepared in 1964 by the acting-head of the Department. Dr. Kurian.

Salient regrets the implications cast on the Asian Studies staff and the compilers of the Calendar. At the same time, it wishes to make clear what is not readily apparent from the Calendar—that the current Asian Studies courses are to he phased out in favour of a different concept of Asian Studies in the University!

It is the intention of Salient later in the year, following the arrival of the new Department head, to survey the past and prospects of the Asian Studies Department.
