Salient: Victoria University Students' Paper. Vol. 24, No. 14. 1961.

Sexual Segregation

Sexual Segregation

Sir,—An official document requires me to bring the following information to the notice of your readers. Due to the embarrassment caused to the male members of the said Victoria University of Wellington by non-males wearing skirts of an abbreviated nature while sitting in the cafeteria of the aforesaid university, an official committee has been set up and a report has been prepared. This said report is to be known as the Barry Report. All students according to the constitution of the said university should familiarise themselves with this report as a Special General Meeting will be called in the near future. The Barry Report recommends the following measures to overcome this grave situation.

1.That in accord with the disposition of the Victoria University, all sexes other than male must comply with the following:
(a)That dresses must extend from the clavicle to four inches below the ankle, on both sides of the person, be made of a non-transparent material, and that both the aforesaid sides be joined securely for the full extension of the material.
(b)That it be forbidden to display a bare arm, as this may prove a future source of embarrassment to the more refined males of the aforesaid institution.
2
(a)That the room known as the cafeteria be divided by a curtain, preferably of iron, and that one sector be given to the male sex, and that the other be given to the remainder.
(b)That suggestion; 2 (a) be violated only on written application to, and the approval of, the controlling body of the non-affiliated Anarchists of the aforesaid institution.

In conclusion, this report stated that, if the policy "Out of sight, out of mind" seemed to have no effect, a motion be put, and in due democratic fashion, be voted upon, expressing lack of confidence in the non-males of the said university.—I am, etc.,

I. M. Hogwash.
