Some 3,000 Costa Rican students paraded through the streets of San Jose on March 24 in protest against Fidel Castro's Cuban Government, according to Radio Reloj (San Jose, March 24). The students took an oath of honour not to return to classes until Costa Rica breaks off diplomatic relations with Cuba, and they have sent a petition to President Echandi urging this step.
The Costa Rican students also protested the Cuban Government's disrespect for human lives and asked that the firing squad executions be discontinued. In particular, the students hope to prevent Castro from executing Father Francisco, a Catholic priest whom the Cubans have sentenced to death.
