After Tournament

After Tournament

Had Victoria won Easter tournament we would, no doubt, have written screeds praising everyone in sight. But there's little point in wondering what we might have done because we are. for another year. wooden spoon holders. In the circumstances it's much wiser to keep very quiet Anyway, that's what club think … if their response to calls for copy are any indication.

But all readers of "Salient" will have an opportunity to read about Tournament in "Student Easter," the latest Press Council Supplement. Sports and the N.Z.U.S.A. meeting are fully covered. But here are a few local titbits to carry on with:—

Hatch In Limelight

Peter Hatch was undoubtedly the outstanding competitor at Easter Tournament swimming. He now holds the N.Z.U. record for the 110 yds. freestyle (62.1 secs. previously 62.4 secs.), the 110 yds. Men's Butterfly (72.1 secs.—74.7 secs.) and the 220 yds. Medley (2 mins. 46.8 sees.—2 mins. 50.1 sees. surprising he was awarded a N.Z.U. Blue for swimming?

The other N.Z.U. Swimming Blue went to Alison Bell, of Otago. Alison beat the previous best time in the Women's Medley by 19.2 sees., and in the 110 yds. Womens' Freestyle by 7.5 sees.

John Court (Auckland), the N.Z.U. and National goalkeeper was awarded a N.Z.U. Blue In

The remainder of the Victoria team performed more than creditably. The Water Polo team finished second. Five of the team were in the North Island team—Peter Hatch, Terry Richmond, Bill Penny, Barry Jeromeson and Conor McBride (as a reserve). Peter and Terry were selected for the N.Z.U. team.

In the swimming, Bill Penny, with a second in the 440 yds. and a third in the 220 yds., performed well. Martin Kerr and Brian Bibby also swam well in the distance and breastroke events respectively.

The Women's Swimming was of the usual high Victoria standard —Gerda Buchler coming second in the Dive and third in the Breast-stroke.

The feature of the Tournament Cowdell came second and third in the breaststroke events and Hans van for Zouwe was a reserve for the North Island Water Polo team. Not bad for the first time in.

All in all excellent swimming.
