Salient: An Organ of Student Opinion at Victoria University Wellington. Vol. 23. No. 1. 1960

Current Capers

The last exec. meeting before the commencement of the University year was held on Monday, February 15.

There was nothing of much import decided, but a good deal of playfulness made for, if nothing else, a pleasant evening.

An intriguing letter was received from some sort of Korean Aviation Club. Contents: A good many honeyed terms and a request for money. The reason: Their aerodrome had blown away. Unfortunately no details were given.

There was some doubt as to whether the rather unorthodox request be forwarded to the International Committee or the Finance Committee.

Des Deacon seconded the motion that the letter be forwarded to the International Committee. Then seconded one to send it to the Finance Committee. He rounded off this burst of inconsistency by seconding a motion to send the letter to both committees. This motion was finally carried.

Treasurer Dave Davy protested all along that the Finance Committee was the only place where financial questions can be discussed. He added that the International Committee has no funds.

"Neither has the Finance Committee," remarked Publications Committee chairman Tony Held.

Orientation Ball

"Is it a looking for women affair?" asked Tony Reid when final arrangements were being made for the Orientation Ball. Tony Reid and the majority of Exec. were all for keeping prices down so that all freshers will be able to attend. A seven or eight-piece orchestra is being booked, and arrangements for an inexpensive supper are being finalised.

Palmerston North.

President John Hercus reported that Dr Culliford was eager to see Victoria representatives in Palmerston North on Thursday, March 17, for the opening of the new Branch University. It seems that several officers of the association. the Easter Tournament controller and the editor of "Salient" will travel (in second-class carriages) to P.N. There they will discuss with local students the formation of a Students' Association. The editor of "Salient" will be keen to sell subscriptions and appoint a Palmerston North correspondent.

Enrolment Cards.

There had been some fairly ambitious plans laid for the improvement of enrolment cards, but time ran out, with no more than the usual changes made.

New Office Secretary.

President Hercus, arriving late to the meeting, had to stall his welcome to the new office secretary. Miss W. Williams, until late in the evening. Wonder what she thought of her first Exec. meeting!

1961 Procession.

Mr A. Mitchell reported on a meeting of the Wellington Festival (1961) Procession Committee that he had attended. Councillors suggested to him that brainstorming sessions at Vic. will help to make the procession better and brighter. The 1961 procession promises to be much more elaborate—and, incidentally, it will be held on a Saturday.
