Salient: An Organ of Student Opinion at Victoria University Wellington. Vol. 23. No. 1. 1960

It And You

It And You

IT 1960 affects every student at Victoria, whether part-time or full-time, fresher or hardened veteran. On you, the student of Victoria, the success of IT stands or falls.

What Is It?

What is IT? IT is the Inter University Tournament to be held at Victoria this Easter, From Good Friday, April 15, when the hordes from outlying institutions of learning descend upon Wellington until Tuesday, 19, and the grand finale—the Tournament Ball.

Tournament can be a great occasion for all students, whether the bent is sporting or social. But remember the key words to a successful Tournament are "individual participation." Each Easter one of the four main universities acts as host and is responsible to NZUSA for the organisation and smooth running of Tournament. This year, of course, Victoria is playing host.

The Tournament Committee, headed by Tournament Controller Ian Chatwin, aims to make IT the greatest Tournament of them all. Now here is how YOU can help.

The Sporting Side

Firstly on the sporting side. Why not compete for VUW? Take your pick from athletics, rowing, yachting, swimming, tennis, basketball, cricket, and defence rifles. Contact the secretaries of the clubs you're interested in, and watch notice boards for dates of meetings, practices and trials. Even if you don't make a team, make a point of being a spectator at Easter.

Now the organisational side of things. If you live in Wellington you can help in the provision of billets for visiting team members. Contact the Billeting Controller, Bridget Kerr, through the exec. office as soon as possible. We need YOUR help badly. Remember we will need about four hundred billets.

The Social Side

Lastly the social side. Try and get along to as many of the official functions as you can. That's the only way that IT can be made a roaring social success. No doubt you've heard friends talk of other Tournaments and the times they've had at them. Let's make Easter Tournament 1960 something to really talk about!

This, then, is IT. And right now, in the background, a small team of stalwarts is doing its utmost to make IT tick, the Club Committees are working up to Tournament pitch, the national student bodies are preparing ... but they all have in the back of their minds that only you—the student—can make IT an unqualified success.
