According to a report by the University Grants Commission, four new universities were established from April, 1957 to March, 1958 in Gorakhpur, Jabalpur, Kurukshetra and Ujjain. The Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore was also made a university. There are at present 39 universities in Indian; Delhi, Aligarh, Banares and Visva Bharati are in the leading position. The number of students is around 850,000; within a period of one or two years, the million mark will have been passed. (A.S.N.S., Jodhpur).
