Men's Committee (4)

Men's Committee (4)

Paul Canham

Paul is a fourth-year Arts student this year taking Honours in History. He has participated in many aspects of student life at VUC particularly rowing and rugby. He has represented VUC in rowing at three Tournaments and also in water polo in 1955. He was last season a Wellington provincial representative at the New Zealand Olympic rowing trials. In rugby Paul has been captain of the VUC Third Seconds last year and of the Junior Thirds this year.

Paul has also served this College as a sports administrator—secretary of the Rowing Club for three years; member of the Rugby Club committee and Rowing Controller at Easter Tournament 1956. He is keenly interested in all Varsity activities (Extrav. Congress, etc.) and would be a great worker for the association if elected.

Paul would especially like to see the student representative on the College Council as more of a representative than at present; he favours the idea of a canteen open all day to sell confectionery, cigarettes etc; and he recognizes the need for a common commonroom. We feel that in Paul the Association has a person of great ability and who would serve the Association to the best of his ability at all times.

Nominator: E. A. Wood field.

Seconders: B. Shaw. J. Gamby.

Pete Carver

H. R. Carver is a third-year student who has spent two years taking Commerce and this year has started Law. He is an active member of the Cricket and Golf Clubs and has represented VUC and NZU at both sports.

While making no rash election promises, if elected he would endeavour to assist in looking after the interests of all students. He would also be quite prepared to listen to suggestions from the progressive and criticisms from the dissatisfied."

Nominator: B. R. Boon.

Seconders: W. A. Bendall. W. L. Allen.

Stuart Comber

Stuart is a fifth-year Law student completing an LL.B. degree this year. During his stay at VUC he has been associated with Extravaganza for four years (this year he was in charge of advertising) and an active member of the Law Faculty Club.

Besides this, Stuart has taken part in many of the social activities around the college and has developed a broad outlook on the problems of drink and sex. Stuart believes that the incoming Executive should consider these points:

Greater co-operation between the people of Wellington and the University, and more University activities directed towards this end; speed up completion of the Student Union Building; help Rugby Club in building of gymnasium on Te Aro Park; vexed question of club grants.

Nominator: B. F. Hill.

Seconders: B. V. Galvin. D. E. C Deacon.

Mike Edwards

Mike Edwards, a full-time student, has for many years taken an active interest in many branches of student affairs. He is a past president of the International Students Club and is the president of the revived Film Society.

He has participated in two Extravaganzas and both times managed to deputise for the mayor as he was indisposed. He has been seen, heavily disguised, in Procesh. The Congress at Curious Cove was twice graced by his presence. During Easter Tournament he was behind, the scenes at Headquarters.

His aim is to try and facilitate town-gown relationships and is prepared to work hard to promote the interests of all students.

Nominator: G. Townsley.

Seconders: F. Little, R. Renner.

Tony Ellis

Tony Ellis offers his services on Executive again this year and has the following record. He entered VUC in 1953 with an Entrance Scholarship and has since obtained a B.A. in Mathematics whilst pursuing a B.A.-L.L.B. course which still claims his attention.

He captains the VUC fencing team in NZU and provincial tournaments and has represented NZU and Wellington. He has a VUC Blue. He played hockey for two years.

He served on the Finance and Cafeteria Subcommittees of the Executive. He has been a delegate to Winter Tournament and Has been Gymnasium and Common Room Controller 1955-56. He has also done other things. He is a member of the retiring Executive.

The new Executive will, it seems, be full of officers elected for the first time and experience in student affairs should .be at a premium. Tony feels that he can provide at least a little of this experience.

Nominator: U. G. Simmers.

Seconders: B. V. Galvin. W. Iles.

Brian Sandford

Brian has attended VUC since 1953 and has in this time (apart from very severe headaches) acquired his B.Sc. in Physics and is now doing Physics Honours. His part in Varsity clubs reads like the proverbial Who's Who. He is at present vice-president of the Maths and Physics Society, an ardent member of MPHMATS, an active member of the Physics Photographic Club and a demonstrator in the Physics Department. He has also put in a few appearances at the Miniature Rifle Club (no bull).

Brian has a rather interesting policy to present. He feels that regardless of how sincere an Exec member may be he will always fail to discover all that the students would like him to bring before Exec. To this end he would like, if elected, to be approached by students on matters they feel need airing. This is very sound and far more practical than any election promise.

I am certain that if elected he will tackle his new responsibilities with the same application that has earned positions of responsibility.

Nominator: B. Cockburn.

Seconders: M. Collins. T. Corbett.

Tim Shirtcliffe

Tim entered VUC in 1953 and hopes to complete an M.Sc. soon. A keen member of the Miniature Rifle Club and a committee member of the Maths and Physics Society, Tim also finds time to supervise the Physics Department Photographic Club and regularly attends MPHMAT functions.

Apart from the academic side of a student's life Tim is of the opinion that a full university life depends on the clubs—both academic and sporting—and the functioning of these clubs in turn depends not only on the keenness of its members but also on its finances. In some circumstances the latter prevent the club being sufficiently useful as a part of college life. He considers that the whole question of club grants requires much consideration.

Nominator: T. G. Corbett.

Seconders: R. Carman, W. Griffin.

Alan Ward

Alan Ward has graduated B.A. and holds a Senior Scholarship in History. He has competed in three summer tournaments and is a committeeman of the Athletic Club. Also on committee of the Weir House Association and president of the Historical Society (remember "Ward v. Munz" at the AGM).

He is concerned about the apathy of the students and college big shots towards physical education activities and certain sports. Would work for greater Exec backing for these activities and seek to interest College Council in supporting efforts to secure better facilities until Te Aro is broken in.

Would also wish to foster better public support for VUC by publicising the, real work of the College—its faculties and its specialist clubs—through advertising, liaison with city organizations and perhaps a new periodical like a cross between Political Science and Time.

Sees an urgent need for better common room facilities and would support the idea of a good common common room with proper amenities in the main Arts block.

Nominator: A. Ellis.

Seconders: J. Bathgate. G. Jackson.

Tony Wood

(For statement see under nominations for secretary.)

Nominator: Tony Ellis

Seconders: Kathryn Blakelock. David Vere-Jones.
