Salient. The Newspaper of Victoria University College. Vol. 20, No. 2. March 29, 1956
[Introduction]
Under the headline "Mr. Algie bungles again" the AUC newspaper Craccum strongly attacked the Minister of Education for not having announced a new scale of University staff salaries, in its issue of March 15.
The newspaper lists four main reasons why increased staff salaries are necessary.
- 1. University staffs have received no share in the country's increased prosperity during the past forty years.
- 2. University staff salaries compare unfavorably with those of other occupational groups, and
- 3. With salaries of overseas university staffs.
- 4. The overall sum spent on the University of New Zealand makes it the cheapest-run University in the world.
"Staff salaries have as much importance for students as the need for retaining and recruiting first-class professors and lecturers for the two are intimately connected," the paper says.
