Pavane Pour Une Jeunesse Defunte

Pavane Pour Une Jeunesse Defunte

Beyond, through the bush, the wind [unclear: blows.]
[unclear: Sharking with] sardonic laughter as it passes
Over the stunted trees and withered grasses.
Its breath condensed before it as it goes
Screaming insane mirth across the desolation.
Somewhere at hand must be sea and shorr.
For beneath the wind I heard the water's sullen roar.
And once, far off, the gulls eerie lametation.
[unclear: I stool there, in the cold livid light]
[unclear: And stirred his stack limbed body with my shoe].
Dead. His silly lank hair lank over his eyes
Through which my mind for dreaming years had sight:
Stilled the ferved brain, who thoughts as mine I knew. . . .
[unclear: Cold, lifeless, as youth which needs must die.]
