Drama Club — Problem Play New Committee

Drama Club

Problem Play New Committee

Unorthodox Indeed was the Annual General Meeting of the Drama Club, held last Tuesday night. Drama fans this year seem to be mostly female freshers, but there was the usual sprinkling of cynical old senior undergrade at the back. That Aunt Daisy of Victoria College, Elizabeth Arya, early took proceedings in hand, and several bewildered freshers found themselves on the committee. Miss Arya, at her best, explained the programme for the year, especially Prof. Gordon's proposal to do "The Duchess of Malfi," possibly in the Concert Chamber.

The meeting was followed by a rather odd play read by first year students. No one seems to have caught the name of the play, or of its author, and its unique beauty was not enhanced by the wild shouting and stamping of the haka party upstairs. This one-acter was a good example of an unsuitable play for any gathering, but the freshers went at it in a fine frenzy, even to a knock-down fight between two of the women.

A feature of the evening's entertainment which must not go unrecorded was the casual manner in which two additions to the already elected committee were made. Upon the late entrance of a member of the club, Miss Arya declared this lady co-opted. Then someone else, getting the hang of the thing, nominated someone else, and the audience found this too accepted.

The committee, at time of writing, appears to be:

President: Huddy Williamson; Secretary: Elizabeth Arya. General Committee: Edith Hannah, Jacky Patrick, Sibyl Reynold., Kerry Jordan, Bill Ord.
