Athletics — Prospects Brighter

Prospects Brighter

If the V.U.C. Athletic Club experienced a lean season in 1937-38, culminating in the annexation of the wooden spoon at the Auckland Tournament, it is now out to remedy that Mate of affairs. This season has been marked by keenness in training and consequent improvement in form. In Inter-club events the letter "V" has appeared among the placing far more frequently than for some years past.

Last week the Empire Games Champion I'at Boot announced that he will be pleased to turn out for the 'Varsity Club. His presence should provide a big stimulus.

Last month a small team paid a visit to Stratford at the invitation of the Stratford A.A.C. The occasion was a handicap meeting held under floodlights. Thanks to a stern handicapper, the only ones to All places were J. S. Adams (2nd Javelin and 3rd 120 hurdles), E. Irving (2nd 120 hurdles), and D. R. Scrymgeour (3rd 1 mile). But it was a most enjoyable trip, nevertheless. Ron Freeman and Jack McVeagh made a good Job of their co-managership.

Provincial Champs.

Then there were the Wellington Provincial Championships on the 25th February. 'Varsity didn't get a single title but the green and gold were in most cases well up in the placings.

Eastwood (2nd) and C. V. Adams (3rd) were so close to Quinn in the 100 yds. final that a blanket would have covered the three of them. Gorringe was another finalist in the 100 and 220, finishing third in the latter. Eastwood was again Just unfortunate in the 440 after setting too fast a puce in the early stages. Again he made Quinn go hard to win. Black is not quite up to form yet in the half-mile. He will be better by Tournament. Geoff Annear was disappointing in the mile but should not be discouraged. He knows he is capable of a better performance. After heating Mackay the previous week in a 3-mile Dewar Shield event. Serymgeour had to fill 2nd place to him in the Championship. His time was a fraction under the N.Z.U. Record. Athol Congalton, in running 3rd in this race showed much improvement. With a little Inure speed he will be hard to beat at this distance. Irving (2nd 120 hurdles and 3rd 220 hurdles) should have done better. He ran well nevertheless and looks like retaining his high hurdles tide at Tournament. J. S. Adams was 3rd in the Javelin throw and is steadily improving as a result of Stan Lay's able tuition in Stratford.

Promising Juniors.

A promising junior in the club is Dave Muir. For a first season in open company he is performing well in the middle distance events. More will be heard of him later.

Northey is another junior who is capable of running anything from 220 yards to a mile. He has run with the harriers for a year or so and has built up plenty of stamina. Now he would be advised to concentrate on one or two distances.

Stacey is another Tournament possibility over the 220 and 440 yards hurdles. Tossman, one of last year's 440 yds., hurdlers, is again in the field. Despite leaving his training late he should be ready by Easter.

Finally an appeal is made to all who have any Ideas about track or field events to rally round. The Inter-faculty sports are scheduled for March 18th and the Tournament team will be chosen largely on performances there, but of that, more anon.
