The Kia ora coo-ee : the magazine for the ANZACS in the Middle East, 1918

To Our Readers

page 11

To Our Readers.

The first series of the "Kia Ora Coo-ee" is completed with this issue, and the experimental stage having been passed, the time is opportune for a review. We asked " for critiques from readers and have received many; some are kind, others the reverse; all are welcome and will be of assistance to us in planning the new series of the Official Magazine, especially in regard to its general tone.

Our aim is to give all ranks of the A.I.F. and N.Z.E.F. in Egypt, Palestine, Salonica and Mesopotamia the kind of magazine they desire. At first, the intention was chi fly to cater for the troops in the Field, and one or two contributions not quite suitable for Home readers of all classes were published. We are pleased to find that, in the great majority of cases, subscribers are sending their copies of the "K.O.C." to Australia or New Zealand, and therefore desire in their own magazine articles of general interest, fiction, humor and pathos in verse and prose, reflecting their everyday life on active service. The new series of the "Kia Ora Coo-ee" will, we are confident, fulfil these requirements. Each issue will contain only contributions that will be read with pleasure by subscribers here and also by the "Old Folks at Home".

In future issues new features will be introduced and a genera] improvement in tone effected. Better quality paper will also be used. Reference was made last month to covers. That of the present issue is from a drawing by Lieutenant G.W.Lambert, who, it is hoped, will design others, while some of his splendid sketches, made in the Field, will probably be reproduced in our special Christmas Number.

A large selection of Australian Official photographs has been made available, and several will be reproduced each month. The subjects cover a wide range. A strong feature of the forthcoming issues will be humorous drawings by Major F.C. Burke Gaffney, Lieut P. Ryan, W.O. D. Barker, Sergt. Otho Hewett, Sapper H. Ivers, Air Mechanic A. R. Betterdige, Fred Coleman, Tpr. Boyd Orr, Tpr. Bert Price, "Bar One", Sapper F.G. Hoare and others.

Verses, articles or stories will be contributed by Colonel C.E. R. Mackesy, Major A.B. Paterson, "Trooper Bluegum", "Koolawarra", "Gerardy', "Twenty Two", "Recco", "Corporal Geebung", "Bill Bowyang", "First Major", "Baltaggi", "Bush Hawk", "Camp Follower", "Gelantipy", "Tibbin", "Diana", Miss M.B. McConaghy, the Editors, and many others.

Each issue will contain a full page of illustrations and special articles, dealing with such subjects as the Light Horse, Field Ambulance work, Camels and Cameliers Signallers, Army Service Corps, Machine Gunners, etc., etc. Articles on nature study will be continued; and arrangements have been made for o her special contributions, including a number on historical places in Palestine, that will be read with interest by all.
