Nineteenth Century New Zealand Artists: A Guide & Handbook

NORTH, Marianne 1830–1890

NORTH, Marianne 1830–1890

Noted English botanist and flower painter who travelled extensively, painting the native flowers of the countries she visited. In 1880, at the suggestion of Charles Darwin, she sailed for Borneo and thence to Australia and New Zealand. She returned to England via California probably sometime in 1881. While she was in New Zealand she is known to have visited Queenstown and to have stayed with Sir Andrew Russell in Napier. Was possibly a connection of Lady Russell.
